Microblog Monday—My New Personal Challenge

Having seen a number of all kinds of challenges on Facebook, from blogging every day to taking a photo every day to doing something or other for a certain number of days—and participating in several with not-always-successful results—I’ve decided to create my own challenge. Since I don’t seem to do well at being accountable to a lot of people in my Facebook/blogging world, I’m going to be accountable to myself alone this time.

So here is my personal challenge:

I am challenging myself to write at least 100 words a day for one hundred days. If I can stick to this, I will have written 10,000 words at the end of the challenge.

I actually began this challenge to myself one week ago and have managed to stay on track, some days writing much more than 100 words.

Now I’m making it public on my blog.

So far I’ve been mostly writing in my novel manuscript, second draft, but I may apply this challenge to other writing as well—sometimes a blog post, maybe working on a short story. The point is just to get the writing done. To pull myself out of my procrastination in as easy a way possible. One hundred words can be written in one paragraph. One paragraph takes only a few minutes.

To make sure I keep myself going, I will check in on my blog periodically to track my progress—maybe on Microblog Mondays.

In the meantime, if anyone else likes this “personal challenge” idea, please do jump in! It’s not quite NaNoWriMo, but it would be nice to have some company!

    1. Sharon, it isn't hard at all (so far). You write many more words on your blog than this. I don't know how you do it. I made this purposefully easy because I'm lazy ;-p

  3. I could never pull this off... I take writing by spells, and mostly, when I do, it is in the form of poetry. And, I lack a basic attention span. Sometimes I just forget what my habits are and go do something else... But I wish you well in this endeavor. I am sure you will succeed beyond your wildest imaginings.

    1. I'm like you, Michael. I've tried many times to create a writing habit and it hasn't held. I'm hoping this one will! Thanks for your comment!

  4. I applaud your challenge Elaine and can't wait to celebrate your success. I fully expect you to be successful, but even if there's a lapse or two, every word written will be a success. Good luck my friend!

    1. Thank you, Amy, and thanks for always supporting me! And you're right, success comes in piling up smaller successes--a word at a time!

  5. What abgreat idea. I have been writing alot. I post 2cdays a week on The Diary of an Alzheimer's Caregiver Monday-Alzheimer's and Friday-something fun, lighter. Then Wednesday on my travel blog million mile blog and then Iam also attempting a novel! When you spend as much time at home as do you get plenty of time to write. I also wanted to say thank you so much for your kind words on The Women of Midlife thread it was very sweet of you. I didn't realize I am having a problem with comments but I just wanted to say thanks again. I love talking to people who have been through it!

    1. Rena, it's not just you--there are a lot of blogs that for some reason I can't seem to comment on. I know the problem must be on my end but I'm not computer savvy enough to figure it out. I also feel a bond with other caregivers, especially for Alzheimer's and dementia. Not to blow my own horn too much, but you might like to take a look at my archives for April of 2012--I did A-Z about my mother, caregiving, and the effects of Alzheimer's. Some of it may strike a chord with you. Thanks for coming by and commenting. I'll be visiting you, too!

    1. Thanks, Laurel. It's not nearly as tough as all the challenges you've taken on. I really don't know how you do it, but I'm glad you do, because I enjoy all your posts!
